Gen. 41:25, 28
Then Joseph said to Pharaoh, “The dreams of Pharaoh are one; the Mighty One has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.
It is this matter that I have spoken to Pharaoh; what the Mighty One is about to do He has shown Pharaoh.”
Visions and Prophecy
From the days of Abraham, YHWH appeared to His prophets in visions. See Genesis 15. YHWH told Aaron and Mariam that with the exception of Moses, He would reveal Himself to prophets in visions. See Numbers12:6. As He spoke to Nathan the prophet (2 Sa. 7:17; 1 Ch. 17:15), He also spoke to the prophets Isaiah, Nahum, and Obadiah with visions. See Isaish 1:1, 2 Chronicles 32:32, Nahum 1:1, and Obadiah 1:1.
Likewise, YHWH spoke to the prophets Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Amos, Micah, Habakkuk, Zechariah, Enoch, and John of Patmos with visions. As He spoke through His prophet Hosea:
I have also spoken by the prophets and have multiplied visions.
I have given symbols through the witness of the prophets.
Prophecy and Instruction
On seven different occasions, the prophet Jeremiah reminded the people of Israel that YHWH had sent them His prophets from the time He brought them out of Egypt until his day.
- Jeremiah 7:25
Even from the day when your fathers went out of the land of Egypt till this day, I send to you all my servants the prophets, daily rising early and sending them.
- Jeremiah 11:7
For I earnestly protested unto your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and protesting, saying: ‘Obey My voice.’
- Jeremiah 25:4
And YHWH has sent unto you all His servants, the prophets, rising early and sending (but you have not listened nor inclined your ear to hear), saying: ‘Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way, and the evil of your doings…’
- Jeremiah 29:19
I sent unto them by My servants the prophets, rising early and sending, and you
listened not… - Jeremiah 32:33
…rising early and teaching, and they are not listening to accept instruction…
- Jeremiah 35:15
And I send unto you all My servants the prophets, rising early and sending, saying: ‘Turn back, I pray you, each from his evil way, and amend your doings.’
- Jeremiah 44:4
And I send unto you all my servants, the prophets, rising early and sending, saying: ‘I pray you, do not this abomination that I have hated.’
As a whole, the nation of Israel repeatedly scorned the prophets’ message to repent from their sins and obey YHWH. This rebellion was the stated reason for both the Assyrian and Babylonian captivities.
2 Ki. 17:13
And YHWH testifies against Israel, and Judah, by the hand of every prophet, and every seer, saying: “Turn back from your evil ways, and keep My commands, My statutes, according to all the instruction that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent unto you by the hand of My servants the prophets” and they have not listened, and hardened their neck, like the necks of their fathers, who did not remain steadfast in YHWH their Mighty One. Therefore, YHWH showed Himself very angry against Israel and turned them aside from His presence.
2 Ch. 17:15-17
And YHWH, the Mighty One of their fathers, sent unto them [His instruction] by the hand of His messengers — rising early and sending — for He had pitied His people, and on His habitation, and they are mocking the messengers of the Almighty, and despising His words, and acting deceitfully with His prophets, till the going up of the fury of YHWH against His people — till there is no healing…
And He caused to go up against them the king of the Chaldeans…
Danial acknowledged this when he prayed to YHWH:
We have rebelled against Him, and have not listened to the voice of YHWH our
Mighty One, to walk in His instructions, that He hath set before us by the hand of
His servants the prophets.
Zechariah also understood this when he prophesied:
And their heart they have made adamant, against hearing the instruction, and the
words, that YHWH of Hosts sent by His Spirit, By the hand of the former prophets.
As we have just read in Jeremiah, Daniel, and Zechariah, 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, YHWH gave His Torah (instruction) through all His servants/messengers the prophets.
One Dream
While Pharoah had two separate dreams, it was essentially just the same dream repeated. This mirrors Joseph’s dream. In Joseph’s first dream, his brothers’ harvest bowed to his. In his second dream, eleven stars bowed to him. His two dreams were simply the same dream repeated.
Pharaoh’s first dream also concerned the harvest of the field. In this dream, seven ears represented seven years. In his second dream, seven cows also represented seven years. Both grain and cattle are symbols of food. In each dream, there were seven good symbols of food, followed by seven bad symbols.
Pharaoh’s dream was more complex than Joseph’s dream. While even his brothers understood what Joseph’s dream meant, Pharoah’s dream required YHWH giving Joseph the ability to interpret it.
As with the symbols of the prophet’s visions, we need YHWH’s assistance to interpret His instructions. We need His Spirit to understand what is written in His Torah.
